| Grimoire Magic Grimoire magic is at its base the utilisation of grimoire's by someone with the ability to perform magic, the grimoires are used as a medium by the spellcaster through which they perform their magics, with the energy to cast said magics being supplied as usual. Without a grimoire however a grimoire mage is reduced to only being able to perform very simple magics and even then at reduced strength as they do not have their medium through which to cast. Due to the fact that they're essentially juggling different aspects of magic however a grimoire mage can only hold so many active grimoires at any one time, that number improving as their ability does and carrying side effects such as heavy migraines, nausea, dizziness and in some cases internal haemorrhaging. The essence of being a grimoire mage is knowledge, it is not an emotion-fuelled magic nor a physical "feel the flow" type, it relies on the mage having spent hours poring over their grimoires and understanding every nuance of every word in it until they can know it by memory and the recall the knowledge from it as second nature. Once they've intimately understood a grimoire they can use it and any knowledge within it, be it anything from fishing or cookery up to something like fire magic or even higher, so long as they have the grimoire active they can use the knowledge contained within it. Grimoire mages could be seen as knowledge keepers, a mark of most grimoire keepers is the fact that they put more stock in knowledge and pursuit of the scholarly arts and will go to great bounds to obtain knowledge for the sake of knowledge, even in a subject they'd not actually use.Grimoire mages however are not just limited by those grimoires they find, they can also write their own. Some of the more advanced grimoire mages have been known to be able to draw a thread of magic through a living object and copy the knowledge of a subject from it, this however can only be used when the objects shields are lowered, for example when they consent to it or when they are in a situation where they cannot maintain their shields such as while they're dying. It has been known for some of the true masters of grimoire magic to even be able to record an attack or an effect, storing it in a grimoire they have prepared in advance and able to unleash said attack or effect to its full effect as a one-time use ability. The downsides of this however are that the user must be able to survive this effect, as in the process of it being recorded into the grimoire the effect or damage still is taken by the mage if they're caught by it. Effects such as this however require much power and as such there aren't many with the ability to do so, as such to most it would just seem as a myth, grimoire mages usually being quite few anyway as the pursuit of its power is usually only sought by those of a more scholarly mind. |
