If i may objectively add from the writers stand point, luck, a whole lot a' luck.

Skills:
What Kath is lacking in powers, his intellect and skill make up for. Apart from luck, quick thinking is the sole quality that gets him out of many 'sticky' situations. His skills come from his ex-military career, much of that record now redacted to the general public.

Other interesting titbits include: Kath is an EVA qualified specialist, recently worked (briefly) as a ship-borne fire fighter and is actually qualified as a light-class star-ship pilot, but his licence has been suspended.

A dispatch team was called in after reports of him and his excessive drinking habits at a local bar (Sector A, Quadrant 4), he subsequently picked a fight with some of the customers, witnesses report initially the magic users were targeted (prejudice?).

Our records show after the Academy, Sol sector, Kath served with the UNSC military for five years, ‘five stinking, miserable, shit-fest years’ as he would delicately phrase it in front of his superior officers. Or should I say ex-superior officers, possibly one of the many plethora of reasons he was recently booted out medal in hand, so to speak. Frankly, he should have been dishonourably discharged for that offence at immediate effect.

Military record is available, though access privileges only go so far, after year three of service onwards access is denied.
