The gold is magically enchanted, making it stronger than it appears.

The sword emits magical energy, meaning anything that can sense magic will sense it's presence.
The sword is classed as a shortsword, meaning the wielder has to get rather close to effectively hit the target.

Description
Forged by the ancient Timeweavers, the Sword of the Sands is infused with chronomagic and made from enchanted gold. Wielded by many Aspects of Time before him, Jack found it sealed in the caves of Zaron during the UNSC's dominion of the planet. There he rightfully claimed it and received his first milestone in become the next Aspect of Time.
