Description
The thieves guild strives to become a collection of thieves from any and all branches of society. From the lowest beggar to a spy deep undercover within a faction. While it has not reached this goal it has begun to extend and expand its influence by any means that it can. From small things like blackmailing or buying off police at a city level to buying protection on a planetary scale. The guild realizes that the things they learn may cause factions to wish to harm them and as such they have a keen interest in aquiring as much dirt as they can on all of the factions. This dirt will allow the guild to blackmail the various factions keeping them at bay.
The thieves guild will not sell the technology that it creates. Instead it will offer the services of its thieves. Thieves that are trained by the guild will receive specialized training in all manner of fields from corporate espionage to basic lock picking depending on the innate skills of the person. The guild has no alliance and is loyal to only each other. They are not an organization that looks to be in the limelight they prefer the shadows. This means their members, and their actions are secretive to say the least. There are instances of members acting in a "Robin Hood" tye manner just as there are members who would rather leach a planet of all of its resources. The latter is frowned on by the guild as it typically brings more attention to the act.
Rationale
Chester Humphries III used part of his parents fortune to begin a variety of small business ventures. These small business ventures were fronts for other "businessess" that Chester operated. These small businessess were designed to train and equip thieves to go into the local communities and begin aquiring both wealth and secrets. At the same time employees were expected to either schools of higher learning paid for by Chester. Degrees in manufacturing, poltical science, business, and any other that might allow a thief to gain access to a job where secrets might be aquired were prized. From these humble beginings the thieves guild was formed. The initial members are now productive members of societies all over the universe. They pay dues to the guild and in return are granted protection in the form of threats, inimidation, blackmail, and bribes. While the guild rarely resorts to violence they do have a highly trained group of trained assassins as well.
