Strengths
Valek is a strong practitioner of blood magic, utilising blood as his main form of attack and defence. He excels in large conflicts where blood flows like water as it means he has a large supply of energy to utilise. He has a very in depth knowledge of the human body and excels in biological sciences, able to utilise that if the need arises, combining this with his blood magics in order to harvest biomass from bodies and grow creatures that are slaves to his will.
Weaknesses
Valek is weak in single person combat as he then only has his own power to use. He is also weak against machinery as once again there is no blood or life energy for him to utilise there. Physically he is nothing above the ordinary, his own physical abilities not being something he focuses on overly.
Valek is prone to acting on a whim and utterly useless in any sort of chain of command where he doesn't sit at the top, completely unable to follow any sort of command if he doesn't want to. He will do only what he wants even if that means losing the day.

History
Valek wasn't always quite as screwed up as he is in his current state. His life had been fairly normal to begin with, he'd started out with two loving parents who pushed him to do his best and grow up to follow his ambitions. His ambitions involved a career as a research biologist and so he followed this, acing exams and slowly climbing up through the levels of qualifications until he had reached his goal. His life's ambition complete he settled down by himself and got on with his work, genetic modification and genome sequencing being his main areas of work and a field in which he excelled.
Unfortunately he was what some might call a late bloomer, and his powers manifested at this point in his life when he was about ready to settle down and get on with what he loved. It didn't take him long to find out that instead of being a distraction this magic that had awakened in him could help to further his work. He just needed subjects.
Pets began disappearing, as did small feral animals, not always in his area and not all of them but enough that people began to notice something was going on. It wasn't long after that that his parents disappeared, from the various documents it seemed that they'd simply left the planet and gone to another where they believed they'd be more happy. Still, it was as if they'd been there one day then gone the next, and Valek was seen to be quite happy in the following few days. People were beginning to suspect that he was related to these disappearances so he made himself disappear also, heading out on the next ship he could find and never looking back.
He knew small minded people would try to stop him but he had these powers why shouldn't he use them as he liked, it was simply scientific progress, it was the way of nature.
