The Grandmaster took his seat in the chamber,the ancient Varanus had his scales whitened with age and he seemed more focused on the documents he brought with him compared to the twisted machine the two students created.


He knew these two well....A young Varanus barely 11 years old and already making machines with the aid of the equally brilliant human female Lisa Heathers,these two where known for causing trouble....Stealing from the supply chambers to add the extra..."oofph" to their latest invention.They received great scores but never got the pass needed to gain entry and sponsorship from the Engineering Corps.The Grandmaster suspected it was partly due to the fact that while they create great working machines and technology,they lack innovation and creativity...The traits the Engineering Corps wanted to help build the new empire.


Since the introduction of Zodarrin in the education system we have made many aspects of the scoring system and sponsorships much more restricted,to weed out incompetency and retain the best of the best to directly serve the Empire in it's centralized research units rather then to work away in a private company to develop ways to earn money.


Money was good but the empire could generate enough of it on a daily basis.....Service was key...It provided a vision past materialistic reward...A vision that fueled the greatness of the Empire.


The Imperial Vision.....Of a utopia encompassing the stars....It seemed like such a distant yet clear dream.


The grandmaster started drifting off.

"Ahem" the Varanus student coughed trying to get the attention of the aged grandmaster.

The grandmaster shook himself and shrugged shaking his head at the disbelief of his age.He took a long look at the raising the equivalent of his eyebrow as he tapped on the holoboard he held in his hands.With a huff he spoke.

"So booklings what is this you have brought before me."

The students looked at one another and the Varanus student spoke once again.

"We have developed a prototype version of a new gravity well that should revolutionize control over warping across the stars.We took the old designs from the Ark and changed some of the design flaws whilst giving it our own....Touch."

The Grandmaster nodded. "Very well....Begin test"

Normally these tests would have been conducted in space but the test chamber had an artifical gravity sphere built to encompass a 5 meter wide arc around the gravity well.This was set to have no gravity whatsoever to mimic space.If it could pull a series of objects under various forms of stress it would pass and be modified for production.
