History
In the beginning, all elves were the same. Each elf saw the others the same way and no elf set themselves apart from another.
Then came the Calling of the Valir, a religious movement to migrate across the vast lands of Athradu to a promised land where the Light of the Valir could be found. Those who took up this quest called themselves Eldar, and those they left behind, Avari. Of the Avari, none may now be found, as they declined and fell into darkness
Not all who embarked on this quest completed it. Some fell in love with the wild places of Athradu and settled down, these were the Silvan, or the Forest Elves, whose decendents still reside in the woods.
Eventually they reached the sea, and some declined to leave the shores of Athradu and settled on the plains and shores and they were called the Sindar, or Grey Elves.
Those who departed the mainland for the promised land reached an island and called it Aman, for it was perfect in almost everyway. These became the Amanar.
The fairest and wisest set themselves up as rulers of this land, as their grace and wisdom was plain for all to see. They are the Vanyar, the High Elves.
The craftiest and most nimble of hands became the artisans and smiths without compare. They are the Nolder, the Deep Elves.
Those who still loved the sea and travelling built ships and traded with all around. They are the Falmar, the Sea Elves.
All was fine, until one day, a Noldor called Fëanor, skilled beyond all others, crafted the Silmarils; gems of utter perfection and flawless beauty. He declared them to be an heirloom of his housem and all were in awe. An elf of unknown tribe, whose name only lives on as Morgoth, coveted the Silmarils and one day, broke into the Fëanor's house, slew his father and stole the Silmarils away, back to the mainland where he gathered like-minded beings to himself, to protect the wonders he had acquired.
Fëanor would not stand for this and pleaded with his family and fellow Noldor to take up arms and retrieve the Silmarils. The Vanyar forbade this, telling Fëanor that to pursue Morgoth would bring ruin to Aman and the mainland and if he persisted, a curse would lie upon him and any who followed him.
But Fëanor could not be dissuaded and many of the Noldor followed him. Reaching the shore of Aman, they pleaded with the Falmar to give them ships to sail to the mainland. The Falmar, however, had been warned by the Vanyar and refused to give aid.
In fury, Fëanor and his Noldor turned their weapons on the Falmar and slaughtered many in an event now known as the Kinslaying. They took the ships and sailed for the mainland to make war upon Morgoth.
Of the battles and conflicts of this period, little is known. The mainland, a land at the time called Beleriand, was ravaged by the war, with the native Sindar faring only slightly better than the Noldor. Fëanor was slain attempting to break the seige of Morgoth's fortress, Udun, along with all of his brothers. Of the Silmarils, two were lost; one to the depths of the sea and another to a chasm in the earth. The last, finally, was stolen from Morgoth's grasp and his vengeance upon Beleriand was overwhelming.
Eventually, the last of Fëanor's descendants, in a last ditch effort, sailed to Aman to plead with the Vanyar and to offer up the last Silmaril as recompense. The entreaty suceeded and the Vanyar gathered their forces and struck at Morgoth with the full might of the Amanar. Even that fell warlord could not resist the power of the Eldar and finally he was defeated.
Beleriand was a smoking ruin and many centuries it took to regain its previous lushness. The Amanar returned to Aman, the proud Noldor now a broken remnant of their past glory.
After the defeat of Morgoth, the elves of Athradu agreed to join together to form one single government to govern all the elves on the planet and thus the creation of the Grottobay.
Under the banner of The Grottobay and with all elves now united. The planet seen a long period of prosperity and peace. During this time dubbed The Golden Revolution, the elves of the Grottobay grew a strong love for science.
