| Name: Cave Fowl Homeplanet: Tenebris Sentience: Non-Sentient Description The males of the species stand, at average, 18 inches. The females, referred to as hens, stand somewhere between 12 and 14 inches. The plumage of the wild Cave Fowl is mostly a dark grey, though on their wings are bars of feathers that glow a light blue. The males have certain feathers on their neck and tail that glow red. The chicks' down is made up of the same metallic substance that their beaks and talons are made up of. Life Cycle Due to the absence of a large number of natural predators in the caves they call home, the Cave Fowl takes a relatively long time to mature. It takes about 30 days for the eggs to hatch and two more months before the chicks begin to lose their downy feathers. Then it takes them three more months to finish growing out all of their feathers. While they can be considered adults at this time, the bird does not become sexually mature until six more months have passed. Social Structure The flocks of the Cave Fowl contain 1 drake, the male, and four to five hens. With very little room to grow in their individual flocks, the Cave Fowl have evolved in such a way that 5, or sometimes even 10, flocks can live in a large cavern. Natural Habitat The wild Cave Fowl are a common sight in the caverns of Tenebris. But only the ones on the northern side of the planet. |
