TK-47 once went by another name, a name given to it by its original inhabitants. These inhabitants were humanoid in appearance and they called themselves Dryads.
Now, as their technology advanced from the stone age all the way to their eventual manipulation in genetics, the race split into two main beliefs. One supported advancement in the realm of genetics, otr "growing" the world around them to fit their needs. The other supported automaton research, believing that it would be far more beneficial in the long run to have machines, instead of animals, working for them. The two sides disagreed on this topic, both pouring more and more research into their specific fields.
Then, by accident, the Dryads discovered the use of biological weapons. The geneticists had refused to go to war, knowing that their living creations would not hold against steel and metal. However, with this new discovery, the doors were now opened to them.
It was not long before the planet was plunged into a deep war between the two factions. Their weapons leaving behind bloody fields and cities. It was the biological weapons, that the geneticists had thought would be their savior, that became their downfall. They had developed a new virus that was airborne and fast acting that would target their own race and destroy the genetic material in their cells. Their military leaders released this on the enemy, quickly finishing the century long war. However, they had no cure for this. Their scientists had warned their leaders, but they paid no heed. They scrambled to find a cure, but none showed itself.
The virus had a failsafe though. It would naturally degrade and rot away with every new incarnation of it, but the Dryads were already long gone, having passed to their own weapons.
There was an unexpected result of their meddling in the world. As the virus degraded, it lost its inhibitors that forced it to only target the Dryads. Now released to the entire population of life on TK-47, the virus, though extremely weakened, went to work rearranging the genetic structures of every living creature. This resulted in the development of species such as the Fenrir, Stone Drakes, and Griffins.
Now, the virus is no more, having rotten away into its base compounds. The remnants of both civilizations abound across the world. Great automatons still roam the southern lands, carrying out the missions they were built for. The abandoned citadels of the north still grow, advancing in all directions, their living buildings continue to rise, eerily ghost-like.
