((Griz))

The surgeons or whatever they were called had done an incredible job piecing his body back together after that fatefull day that had seen him almost lose his life.  Besides saving his life they had given him added benifits in the cyber technology that he was now equipped with.  It was hard to believe and yet every time he looked at his limbs he was reminded of the fact.  He very much doubted his enhancements were state of the art for many of the various planets but for him they were extraordinary.  He flexed his hand watching the metal move just as if it were flesh.  The work was amazing.  With it he'd been able to continue doing bomb disposal work  something he had feared he would never be able to do again.

In addition to the nimbleness of his fingers he had been implanted with a  bomb recognition snanner in his left arm that was tied directly into a growing database of bombs, bombers, and weapon manufacturers.  Blue prints and bios for any could be pulled up at his leisure a very handy option for somebody whos life depended on knowing exactly what kind of device he was looking at.  The individuals who had installed his cybernetics must have asked his unit for exactly what manner of tools they used as a panel in his left arm was able to open up revealing two shiny rows of new tools.  The tools ranged from an ohm meter to a magic detecting device he had only seen once.  The kit included of course the various small knives and wire cutters needed as well.

While the extras already mentioned would have, and did, make Griz extremely happy there was the added bonus of gaining extra strength from the cybernetics as well.  As his torso was still flesh and bone primarily his shoulders could tire if he worked his arms too hard but doing so was infrequent.

The cybernetics in his legs were just as simple and refined as those in his arms.  While they hadn't gone overboard in granting extra strength and speed they allowed movement identical to what it had been before losing his limbs. Compartments in his legs had been hollowed out for him to hold a trio of grenades in one leg and in the other a sidearm of his choice with three clips of ammunition.  Simple, refined, elegant Griz was impressed but not as impressed as he was with his eye implant.

The eye implant hadn't been made to match his existing eye, matter of fact it was fairly guady.  A ruby red pupil surrounded by black nothingness encased in a shell of metal, guady.  Griz liked it nontheless feeling it made him stand out in a crowd.  He liked it even more when he found the optic in the eye allowed for him to immedietly pull up the range of a given target, to zoom in on that target, and even to use clues from the landscape to determine windspeed and direction.  As a grenadier the information was invaluable and something he would have killed to get his hands on earlier in his life.

The final enhancement had come in the form of artificial lungs.  The thinkin had been it would be harder for him to die by gas inhalation if his lungs were not dependant upon pure air.  The new lungs would function similar to a sophisticated gas mask filterering out anything larger than six parts per million.  They wouldn't allow him to breathe freely in the vaccuum of space but they were damned better than the pierced lung he had before surgery!

The enhancements came with a price however.  A price Griz was more than happy to repay.  His length of service was extended from two remaining years to six.  What he was less happy about was the pay reduction that was written into his new contract.  Regardless of increase in rank he would receive three fifths of what he had been receiving pre-injury.  His cybernetics had been costly and they needed to recupe some of the costs from them.  He was told he was going to have to spend time relearning to utilize his limbs as well before going back to the front lines.

Rehab was a joke.  There was no other way to put it.  It was far from the conditions that he used to simulate combat with his men.  Then again having bullets flying while attempting to relearn just how far to cut a wire so you can strip the coating from it that would be frightening.  As it was he had spent several days doing doing nothing other than working with different guages of wire getting his hands used to the amount of pressure to use when squeezing the wire cutters.  A bit too much pressure and it was possible to blow up an entire city block.  While tedius he had to agree the work was very much needed.

The amount of running and physical excercise they forced him to participate in surprised him.  With his new arms, legs, and lungs the physical aspect wasn't very difficult in the least.  Well most of it wasn't.  Getting the propper coordination down had been a disaster at first.  But after a few days it had all come back to him and he was able to use the limbs as he would have used his original.

The eye had come as a surprise when it had come online but what a surprise! He'd been on a grenade range and had been impressed with the results that just a small amount of information could give.  His normal accuracy rating of between 90-93% had jumped to 99%.  When dealing with grenades that level of accuracy meant kills, lots of kills.  He could get used to these upgrades.

Griz sighed in frustration tearing his gaze away from the screen in his left arm.  What had seemed like such a wonderfull addition to his body was still wonderfull but also tedius to the tenth degree.  He hadn't known that his bain was going to be picked day in and day out adding to the various collections of known bombs, bomb makers, arms dealers, distrubutors ect.  That's what files were for.  He'd had to push mountains on paper every time he'd encountered a new device.  What the hell was he doing now?

Why couldn't some pencil pusher enter everything in to some computer somewhere and then just have him plug into it? Then again the information was sensitive.  No reason to give some pencil pusher the blue prints for a bomb large enough to destroy half a planet.  There was that, but he had bigger grander things he could be doing instead of...this.

He looked out the hospital window witnessing a family playing with a child in the couryard below and grimaced.  Kids, snot and fecal factories, he could do without them.  They were worse than raw recruits always needing and never giving anything back.  By the time they were able to give back they refused to do so.  With a wry grin he reflected on his own youth and the lack of parenting he'd had.  It had helped make him the man he was today.  Unlike most he'd given back though.  The thought filled him with a sense of pride further inflating an aready immense ego.

"You chicken shit I said HIT IT!"

The voice taunting Griz belonged to somebody behind a wall of glass protected from his anger.  Knowing it made Griz even angrier.  He'd come to physical therapy only to be told to come to this particular room today.  He had entered only to be locked in.  Surveying the room he had seen massive slabs of concrete, brick, and stone.  He'd no idea what devilry his therapist was going to put him though.  If he had he wouldn't have shown up.

"Again pick up that pile of brick.  What are you a two year old? No, a two year old would follow instructions.  Pick up the damn bricks."

Tired and angry Griz kept doing what the therapist ordered although in the back of his mind he wanted nothing more than to rip him or her into bite sized pieces.  He stared up at the glass window that overlooked the room he was in and felt his body instantly relax, or maybe it was adrenaline.  The figure who looked down from the window was very much feminine.  They locked eyes for a brief moment before Griz felt himself going into hyperdrive.  Bricks were picked up, thrown about, and then punched through.  Rock slabs were curled, bench pressed, and then torn apart.  The entire time Griz kept an eye towards the woman wondering just who she was and if he was going to meet her.

In the room above the woman looked down at Griz as if she were looking at an ant through a microsope.  "Incredible all it takes is the propper motivation.  Have you found anything else that triggers his desire to please? Don't tell me.  I'm guessing being watched by anybody is going to charge his batteries.  Where do you guys get these freaks?"

That night Griz soaked his aching muscles he wasn't sure if the metal limbs would rust but assumed they wouldn't.  As a soldier he was going to see the outdoors and the elements more than the typical person.  The Reich wouldn't put worthless technology to use would they? He couldn't believe that they would do such a thing.  He grabbed the bottle of beer next to the tub and drank deeply.  It had taken him far, far too many bottles to learn how to grab hold of one without making it disentegrate in his grasp.

He took another swig and thought about the woman who had been watching him.  They were going to meet he was sure of it.  When they did meet she was going to become his if only for a night.  There was no way around it.  With the water getting cold Griz set the bottle down and hopped out of the tub.  He almost wished the barracks had a communal shower set up it would give him a reason to flaunt his new improved body as he walked down the hall.  One last pull from the bottle and he resigned himself to going to sleep, alone.  If he was going to do that though it was best to start imputting as much information as possible into the information software in his arm.
